As I am writing this, it is the eve before people in my region of the world typically return to work after a four-week vacation (I know, we are lucky here in the Nordics.).
While this is the time many people mourn the end of the vacation, I can't help feeling pure excitement. In fact, I have been prepping myself for the coming business season for over a week already. You might think I am a workaholic with no life. But that's not how I see it. To me, there is no work life balance. I don't work. I live my life. And a major part of that is being an entrepreneur who pursues exciting goals and adventures. It's not that I don't like vacationing, in fact I love it. I love taking some distance from the business, blocking myself totally from my daily routines. By doing do, I find myself coming back stronger and more inspired for the new season. (Yes, I think of business as a game, and I think of spring and fall as seasons).
This brings me to the most important point of this post. You.
How do you feel about the upcoming business season? Are you excited? Are you ready to give it your all? Are you willing to do whatever it takes, to show up prepared to play your best game every day?
It saddens me to know so many people that don't get excited about what they do. If you are one of those people, I urge you to take some time to dig deep into yourself and look for the problem. Yes, I mean problem, because you should not accept the common attitude that "work is work", and that life is lived outside your working hours. That is just simply not true. You owe it to yourself to make your work your life's creation, your mission, the thing you get a kick out of.
Here is my formula for achieving anything you want in life. It is so simple it never fails. But remember, it is a simple framework which won't put in the hours for you. But hopefully it can help you.
I believe mastery and achievement (of anything, really) comes down to getting three levels right for yourself. They are: The Right Psychology, The Right Knowledge and The Right Action. You could think of them as a pyramid if you will, with the bottom level being the Psychology, the mid-level the Knowledge, and the top being the Action. Here is the formula:
"Your level of The Right Psychology X your level of The Right Knowledge X the level of The Right Action (massive, focused hustling) equals your level of achievement"
The Right Psychology includes your mindset, your beliefs, values, attitude and your focus. In one word, your motivation. Motivation is everything. Well, almost. This level is probably 70% of the deal, probably more. If you have a strong desire mixed with self-discipline, you can accomplish nearly anything. But now I am getting ahead of myself. Start by examining yourself and by challenging your current beliefs. Chances are you are undermining yourself and your potential in a major way. Start setting clearly articulated goals and link some big purpose to it. What do you really want? What excites you? What would you do if nothing scared you? What is the worst that could happen if you failed? What new beliefs would empower you? What negative beliefs are standing in your way? Write it all down, it will be liberating. I promise. Some of the biggest barriers in our lives are the stories we tell ourselves, many of which are lies. Change your story, make it empowering and inspiring for yourself.
The second level you need is The Right Knowledge. Knowledge is power. Knowledge is confidence. Unless you know that you will be able to achieve something, you probably won't. Confidence is nothing but knowledge, when you think about it. And knowledge also means using information in ways that guides you forward, that directs you to the right strategies and tactics that you need to apply to reach your goals. The Right Knowledge will save you massive amounts of time and effort. Personally, I have made it a commitment to read at least 50 books per year for the last 15 years. Boy has that helped me. All the wisdom of all the lives of the people, available for 10-20 bucks? Books are so cheap it's ridiculous. Yet, most people fail to read two books per year. I am not saying reading books is the only path to knowledge, but I am suggesting that if you don't make it part of your "knowledge plan" you are not setting yourself up to win. You have to find the information that will help you gain the knowledge you need to move forward in the right direction. What would you need to know to advance toward your goals? Where can you find that information you need? Do some serious research, talk to people, and synthesise it all. What insights did you have? What strategies and tactics can you define for yourself?
The third level is The Right Action. And not just any kind of action. You need to take Massive Action. With the right kind of knowledge, you will formulate a strategy which you can go back to and improve. But then you need action. This is probably your biggest opportunity. Most things in life that are worth pursuing take a lot more effort to achieve than people estimate. Hence, most people quit at the first or second setback. You need grit, determination, self-discipline...creativity, and lots of energy. That's why The Right Psychology will be in high demand. Start committing to taking enormous amounts of action to outplay your competition, merely by grinding more will you surpass 97% of the population. And remember, there is competition for everything you do, whether it's your position, your idea, your brand, everything. So stop kidding yourself by thinking one tweet a day will get you noticed, or that raising your hand and speaking out in one meeting will get you noticed. You need to create ten times more content on social media, speak up ten times more than others in meetings before you will get noticed.
The biggest hurdle for most people is taking action. The reasons are many, and most of them relate to level 1: Psychology. We don't think we have the time, we don't believe in ourselves, etc. Simply taking massive action will in itself guarantee achievement, providing you learn and adjust your first two levels.
In summary, the formula is not linear, but you cannot skip any level entirely. Your thinking, your knowledge and your action are all it takes. Make it a habit to design all these areas to move you toward your goals and you will be surprised at how big results you will see. I can guarantee that. Thanks for tuning in and I wish you massive success in the Fall season of 2016.
p.s. Drop me a note if you want more details of how to use the formula. In the meantime, I wish you success in the upcoming business season - Fall 2016!
